Get there by bike
Traffic congestion, climate change and taking better care of your health are all good reasons to commute by bicycle as much as possible. By local jurisdiction, Washington, D.C. holds the best record for daily short-trip bicycle commuting with 49% of residents using two wheels instead of four each day. Montgomery’s share is 17%. We can do better.
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) conducted a greenhouse gas emissions inventory that set a baseline for the county. That 2005 measurement showed that (non-bicycle) transportation accounts for 34% of greenhouse gas emissions in Montgomery County. A County Climate Protection Plan calls for increasing the number of bike lanes in our communities. But until more lanes are ready, learn how you can get started with daily bike commuting by clicking here.

The county goal for reducing greenhouse gas emissions includes reducing emissions by 10% every five years for a cummulative reduction of 80% by 2050. We can get there by bike -- and by taking other measures.
