The Good Earth.... in the International Year of the Forests
To celebrate Earth Day 2011, we've loaded photos from a few County events. Happy viewing! (Apologies for the layout and lack of captions. The page was intended as a quick share for interested friends, members and colleagues.) To those good souls who "walk the talk" on the environment every day: Hats off to you! You are environmental heroes. You remind us that the environment is OUTDOORS. Over the next 6 months of moderate temperatures, may we all get outdoors and experience what we treasure about living in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The first set of following photos are from a March 27, 2011 project led by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and the Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC). About 300 naturally generating young trees were caged to protect them from deer browse in the Reddy Valley Stream Park. Thanks to Katherine Nelson from M-NCPPC and Kim Knox from WSSC for their efforts in leading students from the Montgomery County Public Schools on this service project. Katherine and Kim both serve on the Montgomery County Forest Conservation Advisory Committee (FCAC).
The second set of photos are from an Earth Day tree planting project in Laytonsville, MD, where over 700 trees were planted by students and families working with staff and management from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, the County Soil Conservation District, Maryland-National Capital Parks and Planning Commission, and the Master Gardeners of the University of Maryland Extension Service. Special thanks goes to David Plummer with Montgomery County, who organized the Earth Day tree planting project.
